NEEDS is a digital library designed for engineering faculty and students of all ages with links to online learning materials in engineering and related areas of science and math.

Rising Above The Gathering Storm: Energizing and Employing America for a Brighter Economic Future

image of future; education of young people NEEDS highlights the congressionally requested National Academies report which urges federal policy-makers to focus on new efforts in science and technology. The numerous references to the report in the media, including National Public Radio, The New York Times, NSF, IEEE and Inside Higher Ed, attest to its significance in the global community of educators.

By providing resources for engineering education, NEEDS and it's partner, TeachEngineering, address two of the four main points of the report: 10,000 Teachers, 10 Million Minds focuses on increasing America's talent pool by vastly improving K-12 mathematics and science education and Best and Brightest recommends changes to make the United States the most attractive setting in which to study and perform research so that we can develop, recruit, and retain top students, scientists, and engineers from both the U.S. and abroad.

Help shape the changes outlined in this report! We encourage you to explore the resources NEEDS offers, comment on Rising Above the Gathering Storm, and submit additional resources.

The National Academies' testimony before Congress, including the report Rising Above The Gathering Storm: Energizing and Employing America for a Brighter Economic Future, helped to inform President Bush's "American Competitiveness Initiative" in his 2006 State of the Union Address. Pre-publications of the forthcoming full report are available at the National Academies Press.
