School is out, but learning is still in... For K-12 students, summertime brings to conclusion the year-long preparation for many engineering-related competitions, such as FIRST, ToyChallenge, and others, that provide students interested in engineering with hands-on experience. Summer also brings time to particpate in one of the many math, science or other pre-engineering camps offered by universites.

NEEDS would like to recognize the efforts of those who have founded competitions, fostered Summer camp programs, built centers or created software, and in so doing have contributed to pre-engineering education.

The roll call of these heroes of pre-engineering education is, happily, a very long list. We can't name them all of course, but would like to mention: Nancy Nelson of GetSET (Science Engineering and Technology), an outreach program that encourages high school girls from groups underrepresented in engineering to pursue careers in math and science.; Lawrence Carlson and Jackie Sullivan, who co-founded the Integrated Teaching and Learning (ITL) Program that began as a grassroots, college-wide initiative to reform the engineering curricula to incorporate hands-on, team-oriented, project-based learning. Ms. Sullivan is currently working on a new website called TeachEngineering; Sheri Sheppard and her successful toy dissection engineering lessons; Alan Kay, who, among feats too numerous to list (though his most recent, winning the Kyoto prize, is definitely worth mentioning, as it is here, here, here and here), also created Squeak, a "media authoring tool" for kids;

Many of the resources in our collection are suitable for classroom or individual use, and are at your command. We invite you to put them to good use, to educate and inspire kids to become engineers, become heroes.
