Current Projects: Gender Equity Projects

Digital Library Infrastructure for NCWIT

NEEDS has partnered with NCWIT and ACM-Women to build a comprehensive digital library of rich media, articles, research papers, pedagogy, partner organizations and curricula on the topic of girls, women and information technology.

Developing a Gender Collection of Digital Learning Resources for Undergraduate Engineering Education

NEEDS is partnering with the Gender and Science Digital Library at the Educational Development Corporation, Eisenhower National Clearinghouse for Mathematics and Science, Association for Women in Science, Institute of Women and Technology, Society of Women Engineers, National Academy of Engineering (Engineer Girl Project), MentorNet and others, to work towards creating digital libraries to assist educators and students in promoting and implementing gender equitable engineering education in both formal and informal settings associated with science, technology, engineering and mathematics education. NEEDS will catalog and annotate resource materials that can be used to broaden the participation of girls and young women in engineering and pre-engineering education and focus on resources that have the potential to influence the pedagogical approaches and teaching styles that support gender equity or serve to encourage girls and women to enter into and stay in engineering programs. We welcome feedback on the following issues associated with designing such a cohesive collection and on-line services to achieve our gender equity goals:

  • What is the role for gender equity in an engineering education digital library?
  • How do we classify and describe gender equity resources for easy and efficient indexing and searching?
  • What criteria are useful for evaluating the effectiveness of gender equity resources?

Please send feedback to Professor Alice M. Agogino at: agogino@smete.org
