ANSWER:

Richard James and Betty James invented the Slinky
Richard James was working with tension springs when one of the springs fell to the ground. He saw how the spring kept "walking", and the idea for the 'Slinky' was born. Betty James not only named her husband's invention, but ran the company from 1960 on, bringing it back from near bankruptcy after James traveled to Bolivia and later died there. Betty James became CEO and, introducing several new slinky toys, made the company a success again. She sold the business in 1998.

Now, do you remember the Slinky jingle?

What walks down stairs, alone or in pairs, And makes a slinkity sound?"
And shoots so high, up in the sky,
Bops up and down like a clown?
Everyone knows its Slinky.
The best present yet to give or get,
The kids will all want to try.
The hit of the day when you're ready to play,
Everyone knows its Slinky.
A spring, a spring, a marvelous thing, Everyone knows itŐs Slinky
Its Slinky, Its Slinky...
It's Slinky, it's Slinky, it's fun for a girl and a boy
It's Slinky, it's Slinky, for fun it's a wonderful toy
