Premier Courseware of 1997

On Friday, November 7, 1997 during the Frontiers in Education conference, Synthesis and John Wiley & Sons, Inc. announced the Premier Courseware of 1997:

Premier Award 1997

Virtual Disk Drive Design Studio by David Yu and Prof. Alice M. Agogino. The Virtual Disk Drive Design Studio provides an immersive, virtual design environment in which the learner designs ACME Engineering's newest disk drive. Designing the disk drive according to the specifications provided, the user first learns the key features and functionality of hard disk drives and then learns about the design trade-offs required to meet the specifications.

The Electric Drill Stack: Case Study of the Black by & Decker CD 2000 Cordless Hand Drill by Prof. Sheri D. Sheppard, Sian Tan, and Jack Hong and Bicycle Dissection by Prof. Sheri D. Sheppard and Melissa Regan. The Drill Stack and Bicycle Dissection support hands-on dissection activities designed to help students understand the components and function of two common items -- the typical hand drill and bicycle. The courseware includes textual explanations, animated schematic drawing and cross-sectional drawings.

Mars Navigator: An Interactive CD Program about Mars, Aerospace Engineering, Astronomy, and JPL Mars Missions by Prof. Kurt Gramoll, Jason Charlton, Kelvin Raharja, Mike Weaver, Justin Tenisci, and Chet Verigan. Mars Navigator provides a wealth of timely information about NASA's missions to Mars and has been a popular outreach tool in the K-12 community. It includes a variety of information from basic astronomy to mission planning to spacecraft design.

These instructional courseware packages were chosen through a rigorous application and review process and represent excellence in the use of computer-based instructional media to enhance engineering learning. The Premier Courseware have distinctive strengths, representing the breadth of styles, sophistication, pedagogies, and use of multimedia that should encourage incorporation of courseware in the classroom.
